Todor Sabev

Professor Todor Sabev is a graduate theologian and historian, a disciple of Acad. Snegarov and of a number of West-European scientists from different universities, where he was on specialization assignments. He is the author of over 500 publications in foreign and domestic editions. He defended dissertations on History of the ancient church and on The independent national church in Bulgaria.
Todor Sabev has served as a Deputy General Secretary of the World Council of Churches in Geneva after having already accomplished a distinguished career as a professor of church history in his native Bulgaria, at the theological academy in Sofia where he became a full professor in 1966. Since 1964 Todor Sabev has been instrumental in establishing and strengthening the relationships of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church with the wider ecumenical movement, having been Vice-Chairman of its Ecumenical Department and member of its Theological Commission for the bilateral dialogues and for the Great and Holy Pan Orthodox Council. Before joining the staff of the WCC, where he carried responsibility first as Staff Moderator of the Unity on Faith and Witness and later as Deputy General Secretary for Relationships, a.o. with the Roman Catholic Church, he served on two World Council Commission and was from 1968 until 1975 a member of its Central and Executive Committees.
